I was identified as gifted in grade three, further cementing any and all social stereotypes that I was to be labeled with until the end of high school. While I have often thought of myself as being good at problem solving, I learned fairly early on that being gifted did not mean I was necessarily smarter than others. Being gifted was not a free pass, and expectations always seemed higher because of my label. For the same reasons that students are identified as gifted, they often end up being bullied and social skills suffer as a result. This is illustrated in The Imitation Game as genius Alan Turing tries to manage a team of cryptographers in cracking the Nazi enigma code. Curiously, theories have been proposed for a retroactive diagnosis of Turing as having had Asperger's syndrome. But can we fairly say whether these behaviours were nature or nurture?
