When I think of scientists I think of a group of people milling about in a lab, some of which are wearing lab coats. There are young scientists and old scientists, and the majority of the scientists toil away on solitary projects. What I did not make accommodations for in my description was gender. Women are in general much less likely to participate in math and science, simply because of the gender roles we have traditionally associate with each. I was fortunate to attend a program where it was always a fairly even mix and men and women, and sometimes more women than men. While my story never included a male-dominated workforce, it did fall into another common science stereotype. One with old, boring professors, and dim, musty labs. It certainly was never as exciting as in the movies.
