When I lived in Vancouver yoga was the trend everywhere. Men, women, hot, cold, morning, night---people were doing yoga all of the time. But it seemed like too much of a fad for me, and I was scared to try it for fear of being humiliated. Only after moving back to Hamilton did I try yoga, and only then after my wife's persistence. Yoga has since become part of a daily routine for me---I listen to meditative readings and do meditative exercises every day. So when I saw on the news this weekend that yoga classes had been cancelled at the University of Ottawa because people felt that it was cultural appropriation, I was mystified. While the yoga fad has certainly been gaining traction as a means of physical exercise, we may want to dismiss these concerns. Yoga is indeed much more than a purely physical practice, however yoga philosophy is that a student should begin with the poses we are all familiar with, and then slowly transition from the physical to spiritual side with time.
